Slow ezgo

Hi I'm new to the site. I have a problem with my 92 ezgo marathon . The cart has a 52 ES D&d motor 500 amp alltrax controller SW80 Albright heavy-duty solenoid, heavy-duty forward reverse switch, new potentiometer that goes for O to 5.50 ohms fully depressed , 2 gauge acetylene cables. Brand new 6 powermaster batteries. I think the cart is slow only hits a top speed of 13 mph has plenty of torque off-line but no top end . I know you can't have your cake and eat it too , but I thought at least 18 mph . Stock 18 tires , it's lifted 5 inches. At help is much appreciated .

That's a great idea, nice schematic . I just want to make sure I'm not missing something . Is more volts the only way? . Vic at d&d tells me that motor should put out 16 mph. I've double checked the wiring. could a forward- reverse switch
Cause voltage drop to motor and make it slow .? Under load at full throttle batteries voltage at motor is around 34 volts.

Like baking a cake, you have to put together the right ingredients to get both speed and torque.

In general terms, Volts = Speed & Amps = Torque.

You've got a high amp delivery system (with at least one bottleneck) and a high Torque motor, but only 36V and stock height tires, so you won't get much more than stock speed.

To get more speed, you need to up the battery pack voltage and/or install taller tires and/or change the differential gear ratio.

Is you Alltrax controller programmable? (AXE or SPM)
If so, make sure the top speed slider is set to max.

The Albright SW80 may be a bottleneck in an amp delivery system with 2Ga cables and a 500A controller. Should be a 400A/1000A super-duty solenoid.

I'm not familiar with powermaster batteries. What AH rating do they have.

If they are "brand new", you can add one (42V) or two (48V) to increase the pack voltage and get more speed.

Upping the pack voltage will probably require changing the solenoid, but that is a weak point anyway.

I get 28MPH on stock height tires and gears at 42V, but it is a sepex system rather than a series wound motor.

I think the problem is in the acetylene cables. isn't that like a tube? I know, I know.. Just couldn't resist.

Alright I deserve the Cable comment . Anyway the controller is an 4855 axe where is the slider is it in the programming? . So you think the solenoid is the problem ? Can you provide me a specific model and brand. I'd like to avoid increasing battery's only because of a space issue . Use the cart as a water tank hauler for motorcross. .

Sorry guy couldn't help it.. Been a crappy couple days and it made me laugh when I saw it.

The slider Johnnieb is talking about is part of the software you can use to program this controller. It is on the Alltrax web site. Requires a Windoze box and a serial cable to connect.

Water tank hauler and speed demon aint gonna happen. You have to build for one or the other. Increased voltage will increase both speed (motor rpm) and torque. Should be exactly what you need.

I managed not to comment on the cables, but it was a challenge.

The slider is at bottom of the control panel window, but they usually come set to 100%

The solenoid most likely isn't keeping the cart's speed down, but it is only rated at 100A or 125A, which is only 15A to 40A more than stock, so it probably won't last long feeding a 500A controller and high torque motor through 2Ga cables.

The nice thing is that it works with 36V, 42V and 48V battery packs.

As for finding space for batteries, I used the space in front of the driver's side wheel well for the seventh one.
Eight 6V batteries will fit under the seat, but it takes a bit of doing in a series cart. However, several people floating around here have done it.

You might want to check for mechanical drag. (Brakes shoes dragging, wheel bearings, under-inflated tires.)
