Default 97/ 350 robin clatter

I have a 350 cc with a 295 head. It recently started making a clattering noise relevant to rpm. I am curious if anyone could recommend a starting point to trouble shoot this. Planning on pulling valve cover and having a look. Hate to pull the engine but it seems that may be the only choice to truly see whats going on.

Can you tell if the noise is coming from the top or bottom end area?

Pretty sure it's the bottom end. Deeper loud tone. Probably the con rod cap.

That would be my first thought;I had a 295 develop a similar sound and it didn't take long for the engine to lock up while I was driving slowing through the yard .I haven't took it apart yet but 99.9% sure it's a broken/disconnected rod since I can only rotate the engine by hand 1/4 turn or so back & forth until it "binds" internally .

Are you sure it's not the clutch?, it's easy to check the clutch and make sure there isn't something loose in side. Before you take the engine apart

Those robin motors are bad about the connecting rod coming loose. Being a 97 needs new valves anyways. 300 for the whole rebuild kit with new rods and pistons.

Robins are easy rebuilds. 2 bolts in the front of block easy to get to and 2 bolts in the back which can be tricky but not that bad. Then 4 on the bottom of the skid plate and that motor comes right out. A day and It can be all done.

The kit doesn't come with the timing belt so be sure to order that.

Ok..... the verdict is in: Broken fan side con rod. Looks like the cylinder walls are in great shape and no obvious damage to any main bearings I believe due to the fact that I shut it down as soon as it started making noise. About to order the rebuild kit and see about getting it back together. Need to mike the cylinders and verify piston size. Hope to get it all done soon!
