Gas smell after sitting overnight
Hi all! New to both golf carts and the forum! Sold a quad at the wife's request and picked up a 2001 Lifted TXT. Cart is in very nice shape for the age and almost perfect - with one exception. After sitting overnight in the garage the smell of raw fuel is absolutely terrible. I checked for leaks and was not able to find any - it is not dripping on the floor or obviously off of any of the hoses. Also checked the oil and there is no gas in the crankcase.
Is there any obvious cause of this that I may be missing? I beleive that it is happening all the time it is just way more noticable after sitting overnight. Thanks!! |

Leaky lawnmower sitting next to the cart. Sorry, I just had to say it! LOL
By the way, for me it was gas in an old pressurized fuel tank for the boat. It lost pressure... |

Gasoline will evaporate quickly so it may be gone before you find it but the smell will still be there. I'm thinking your needle and seat may be letting some fuel by and while running it will get burned. When not running a little will leak out the overflow until the pressure dies down. Or the tank is leaking. Put a piece of tape on the side of the tank at night and check it the next day..

Put a fresh piece of cardboard under it. That will show a stain.

Re: Gas smell after sitting overnight
Thanks everyone! Figured it out. There is a crack in the seam of the gas tank near the fuel pickup which is leaking vapor out... Now - any thoughts on how to repair this? New gas tanks are around $200...
Thanks! |

Price depends on if you have the gauge or not but should be $150 or less. If the crack is on the top of the tank some sealant like make a gasket should fix it. Just make sure to get the kind that gas won't affect.

My seam was leaking too. I degreased the tank real good, and smeared a quart of this stuff on the bottom of the tank. http://www.skygeek.com/prc-desoto-pr...k-sealant.html
You could also think about doing some plastic welding with a soldering iron. |

Re: Gas smell after sitting overnight
PR1422, as listed in the above post is what we use on aircraft to seal internal end external leaks on our jets. It's designed for use in wet applications such as yours. Your plastic tank is a poly compound so some adhesives wont take to what you curently have. Drain it, dry it out and vent really good and apply sealant liberally. Let it dry per the instructions and reinstall. We have jets flying with PR1422 repairs, lasting 10 years or more.
Keep your eye open around the internet, you may be able to find a good used tank significantly cheaper than new. Good luck. |

Re: Gas smell after sitting overnight
I used this 2 part epoxy on a oil pan that believe it or not had a rusted hole in it, (5 year old ford van)... worked great for years.
