Default G16 with Carb problems I think..

I will be going down fat dumb and happy and the motor starts chugging like it is starving for fuel then dies. If I wait a few seconds I can start her up and she runs fine. It has done this twice on me. Once when I had only gone a 100 yards on a cold engine and once after a couple miles. I seel to smell a little gas when it does it.

There is very little fuel in the filter but if I remove the hose from the out side of the filter and start it fuel flows nicely.

Any ideas?

Is there still a filter in the tank? If not, could there be a golf ball or something rolling up and covering up the fuel exit port?
How old is the gas? and somewhere in this I would take the carb. apart and have a look.

Have you checked to make sure all vacuum hoses are sound and secure,(no leaks or tares) including the plastic T in that line?

Would a failing check valve in the line coming off the passenger side of the valve cover (if a 16 has a check valve there) cause it to loose vacuum and stop the fuel pump from cycling?

And how are your electrical and ground connections, anything loose or been worked on lately? A loose wire could cause the same symptom.

These are just a few ideas, maybe one will help.

*******No filter in the tank and no golf ball. I did check the fuel pickup tube and it looks good. The gas is about 4 months old but was treated with stabilizer.

and somewhere in this I would take the carb. apart and have a look.

*******Trying to avoid that.

*******They seem ok and there is no T

*******Not that I can see

One more thing is it seems to have lost power lately but that may just be me.

New Air and Fuel filters and new sparkplug in Dec. The valves were adjusted about 25 hours ago.

Mine starts hard in the cold. And has been losing power in the same manner. I was told to do a compression check. Low compression, poor fuel pump action. Also the fuel pump might be weak. Its vacuum actuated by a diaphram. Or the fuel pump could be full of junk. Its to cold to do any troubleshooting here for me.

The fuel pump is pumping fine. It squirts a good 10" from the end of the filter.

Breugal, Have you checked to see if you have continuous spark? And I would replace the gas, just to be going forward with something. I'm old school, and additives... Well, just not the real thing.

If that doesn't do it, carb check and compression check. Not necessarily in that order.

If its got spark, gas and compression, it has to run. Or its blown up...or out of time.
