Default Starter won't shut off when cold

My starter continues to run for up to 45 seconds after the motor shuts down in below freezing temps. Works fine when it's warm out. Could it be the micro switch in pedal linkage? I have the service manual for my 1997 but it doesn't help with this problem. It continues to run even if key is turned of after coming to a stop.

Sounds like the large contacts on the solenoid are sticking.

So what does the accelerator micro switch do. My service manual is silent on that. I have ordered the selonoid as a start. Is this common w aging selonoids?

Your accelerator switch provides power to the small terminals of the solenoid, which is nothing more than an electromagnet that pulls down on the big contactors.

Your key switch, and your accelerator switch are hooked in series. If your accelerator switch was stuck, turning off the key would kill the starter.

Since it still runs even with the key switch off, that points to the solenoid.

I have no idea how common that is.

make sure the throttle linkage moves freely. If the butterfly in carburetor does not close completely the engine can "diesel" and do as you described.

New selenoid seems to have fixed problem. Although we've had a warm spell in Pennsylvania will have to see when it gets real cold. Thanks.
