Default G16 to g22 steering rack conversion

Been doing some research as I have a g16 with a broken steering box. Looking further into it I’ve found that the g22 rack seems to be the one to use to convert. My question being is how many spline and what size shaft comes out of the g22 steering rack itself? Thanks

The frames are quite different where the steering apparatuss connect. I have never heard of this conversion before. Also, keep in mind the OEM G22 steering assembly is no longer available from Yamaha. I think if this conversion is possible, including parts availability issues, I think it would be easier to find a better condition G16 box.

I can’t seem to find the post on here. Someone has done it, involved welding a plate to the underside. It seems as if you may be mixed up? The g22 uses a rack and pinion where as the g16 has the box with the steering column is connected as one piece. I can not source a oem steering box for the g16 it seems.

Can’t seem to find a g16 steering box online. Where as the g22 steering rack and pinion is available. I remember seeing a forum thread with someone having done this swap already

I was talking about finding a G16 box "good used". And I am fairly confident about availability from Yamaha on the steering rack (this a pic from the dealer portal from about 5 minutes ago). I don't know who out there is selling what, but I know you can't order it from yahama. "NO ESD" is No estimated shipping date.

The part number is JU0-F3400-00-00, and the scribbled-out area is our dealer number...

I've built a few custom carts in my time. I had a G8 (much like the G16 steering components), some may remember "Wilson". Not only do you have to build the "platform/framework" for the "rack", but you also need the G22 column, and it's internal parts, build a mount for the column, buy the "joint" from the column shaft to the rack (also discontinued and aftermarket is over 500.00!), then the hard part..."bump steer"!!! I would not venture to try it again. There are members that have bought after market "racks" from a dune buggie places. You could get a rack and the "joints" needed, but you still need steering column shaft splines to mate. Might search in the "lifted cart section" for "rack and pinion" installs. Good luck on your build

Ended up finding a g16 box and column thankfully. Makes life a little easier. I’m a welder for a living so the fab part would’ve been fun but for what I’m doing with the cart I’m glad I found a replacement.

Good deal! That conversion was gonna be a pretty big hassle.

Yeah! I was thinking about mounting a plate to the existing steering box mounting plate. Using two pillowblock bearings with a go cart or sand dune style steering shaft and make the appropriate steering shaft using splined u-joints going to the mounted g22 rack. Finding the direct replacement makes life easier.

Would you possibly know what kind of fluid the steering box takes?
