G16 whistle/whining sound
I just noticed recently that i get an odd whining sound out of my engine or clutch that while it sounds cool, doesn't sound normal. It may be coming from the clutch or belt but was hoping this might be a familiar sound to someone. Posting a video to help.

Re: G16 whistle/whining sound
Yeah, not cool. Sounds like maybe a bearing in the starter/generator. You should remove the larger drive belt, and start it up again to see if the noise still happens.

Re: G16 whistle/whining sound
I have never heard that, or had that happen. I would be more concerned with keeping the RPMs reasonable, since the governor isn't functional without the drive belt.

Re: G16 whistle/whining sound
I will give that a try. I will also try a pump of grease and see if it has any effect on the sound which of course would narrow it down. If it's in neutral it couldn't be anything to do with the diff could it?

Re: G16 whistle/whining sound
Yes, the input shaft and it's bearings are stiill spinning, and input shaft bearings are one of the most common bearings to go on that axle.

Re: G16 whistle/whining sound
Ok, good to know. I have to redo the gasket on the rear diff this weekend so maybe i will check for play on the bearing/shaft.
Thanks again for the help guys. Sent from my Pixel 3 XL using Tapatalk |

Re: G16 whistle/whining sound
If you redid the side cover, I hope you used a gasket. The input shaft is shimmed to a certain range of endplay, and will be too tight if you just siliconed it on without a gasket.

Re: G16 whistle/whining sound
Yamaha used only silicone, no gasket on the diff cover, so that's fine (it has nothing to do with tight tolerances of shafts or bearings). The side cover on the transaxle is a different story.
