Default G22 Whining Rear end

It whines when driving but when you let off the gas and coast it is really loud. Could it be low on rear ended fluid? If so how do you check it?

It sounds like the transaxle gears, no way to know until you drain and refill. Do you have a manual? I'm not familiar with that cart, but there should be a drain and fill plugs. I think that has a rear end cover like a car, no? If so there should be a oil level plug in the middle of the cover. Just remove that one and use your finger to see where the oil level is. It should be just below the hole.

If the oil is low, it must have leaked out. Look for oil residue. If there's water in the oil (milky color) the trans either had a bath in a creek or the trans got really hot several times and condensation built up. Either case is not good.

No telling the condition of the oil until you drain it. I'd plan on doing that. To refill you use a hose on a bottle of oil and fill it through the oil level plug hole.

When I drain the gear oil I drain it into an old tshirt to see how much metal is in there.

For the proper procedure, you really should get a copy of the manual just to be safe. Oil capacity and type will be listed, as well as the step by step procedures.

And no, you dont fill to the bottom of the plug, unless you like oil coming out the vent. You put in the 415cc specified, not more. You need to pull the cover off & check things out. It doesnt use a gasket from the factory, just silicone to seal it.

Just so you know I'm not just posting random procedures. On page 8-10 of the manual I posted is says this:

Gear Box Oil
To check gear box oil level:
1. Place the golf car on a level surface.
2. Remove the access panel by
removing the screws in the two
lower corners of the panel and
pulling the panel from the car.
3. Remove the oil level plug A.
4. Add gear oil little by little until oil
flows from the level plug hole B.
5. Allow excess gear oil to flow out
until it stops.

Not saying you're wrong, just posting what is in the manual.

That info is perfect for the yamaha built axle, not the Dana axle. The dana has no "plug A" & "plug B", only one hole. And originally had a sticker next to the hole that said "415 cc oil". Just going by what's written on the axle, right next to the fill hole.

(These numbers have increased slightly since the return of the Dana/Schaefer axle in 2015).

Wow I wouldn't expect the manual to be wrong. SMH We are talking about the G22 right? So the G22 had two different axle housings available?

The bad part is if its making noise it might already be too late. I had a CC the gears and some bearings were toast.

That's why I suggested draining the oil into a tshirt or towel. If there's metal in there, no bueno!

Come to find out they ran the rear end out of fluid. Don’t know how long they drove it like that but I refilled it and it still makes the noise just not as loud but still whining when you coast.
