(really) Inexpensive Tachometer
For anyone interested, I snagged one of these tachs the other day on flea-bay. For about $12 shipped I figured I had nothing to lose. I was quite happy to find that it works like a charm. I have a pretty good ear for engines and a feel for where they are "comfortable" but I wanted to verify my RPMs and didn't have a bunch of spare cash to play with. I hooked this up this afternoon in less than 5 minutes and went cruising around my neighborhood and was pleasantly surprised! Not only did I verify my rpms on my cart for next to nothing, but I can use it on any small engine around the house if I need to.

No idea what brand it is. It came in a white box with directions...no manufacturing info on it..but for 12 bucks shipped I don't really care as long as it serves my purpose. I see that link went dead but the one Roady posted is the correct one...thanks Roady |

Re: (really) Inexpensive Tachometer
I just ordered mine for $13.68. That includes shipping. I bought one very similar to this about eight years ago and it was $35.00. I really don't care much about the tach but I want the hour meter for oil changes. Thanks for letting us know about it.

I've got the service parts and owner/operator manuals both here and nowhere that I can see does it say anything about RPM. I have searched this forum and others and the consensus seems to be 4 grand and maybe a skosh more on occasion will be fine. That seems about right the way the motor sounds to me. Cruising around yesterday after hooking up the meter it showed me 3500-3750 average cruising RPM and nailing it at the bottom of a hill to climb it or rolling out down the back side hits maybe 4250 peak. Sounds to me like that 4 grand number is right on the money. |

Is the tach backlit? I would like to be able to see RMS at night.
