the 3 prong switch is the one i want to change or all 3 ?
i ask cause the 3 wire one is $20 the others are $5 |

what the heck does the resistor do ?
 why is there 3 wires on #2 switch and only 2 are used ? will replacing #2 with a 2 pole switch be ok ? should i just replace #3 or all ?  |

The resistor is for half speed reverse operation, but as for the other questions, I'm clueless!

It bypasses the resistor in the forward direction. It's hard to tell in your drawing but if it was drawn out schematically the signal would come into the top common connection and if it was in reverse it would go out the NC connection through the resistor where it would be attenuated further to give a lower speed in reverse. Or out the NO where it would be unchanged. Disconnect the common wire and you should be able to check the switch with an ohmmeter.
