blown transaxle?

96 g-16, I was attempting to climb a fairly steep hill with 3 passengers onboard when something just gave out on my cart. Engine starts and clutches engage but cart wont move. Its as if its stuck in neutral, I dont hear any grinding noises coming from the rear end but I feel its got to be some type of rear end problem. I'm gonna open it up and take a look but I have no idea what I'm looking for. Anybody ever have a similar problem or any advice on what I should look for?

Follow shifter cables first. Manually shift from forward to rev. Hope you have a broken shifter cable.

Before you take anything apart, check for a stripped axle hub.

shifter cables are good, I can see the arm they attach to move when I shift but not much. I'll probably try disconnecting the shifter cables and manually try to move the arm and see what happens.

Scotty, you were on the money, took rear hubs off and passenger side hub was completely stripped, totally rounded out. Unfortunately the splines on the shaft are also pretty chewed up although not as bad. How do I go about removing the shaft? Also I'm wondering if I damaged more than just this because when I fire up the engine and the shafts start to turn, I can grab ahold of them with my hand and stop them from moving. Could I have stripped something on the opposite side of the shaft, inside the differential housing?

Well I opened up the differential housing and removed both transaxle shafts. I'm no transaxle guru, but I'd say everything looks good in there. No metal shavings or cracked teeth on any of the gears. Looks like all I need is a new hub and transaxle shaft. Can anyone recommend a site to order these parts from? Also can anyone send me a link explaining how a transaxle works, I'm still confused as to how I can grab ahold of the shaft and stop it from turning. Does it have anything to do with the rear wheels being jacked up and not being under load, or is there still the possibility that something else is wrong?

Yes you can stop one axle, there is no problem with that, these are not Positraction rearends

I carry some HD Hubs for Ezgo and Yamaha. You describe the stripped hub to a tee Like RIB says everything sounds normal. A small amount of thread distortion is tolerable on the axle.... any more than a little means the axle and outer bearing should be replaced.

Great call Scotty Are you suggesting the "Ausco" hub's? They really look "strong". Guess, since you took the rear diff pan off, now you can add fresh gear lube.
