Bingo, I think we have a winner.

This cart was modified with a switch that allows the cart to run constantly, but the starter/generator is only engaged when you hold a button on the floorboard

Now, I guess I should just wire up one of the microswitches to "engage" the solenoid when the accelerator is pushed.

Reading this I have to ask, What is the purpose of the yellow DF wire off the generator? I was under the impression that the charging amperage was through this terminal through the voltage regulator and back to the battery.

The DF wire is the Field wire. To cause the generator to charge, you ground that wire. (makes a good test for the generator or regulator) Do not just hook it to ground and forget it if your regulator dies. If it is left connected to ground all the time, you will cook your battery and probably some other stuff too.
