Unhappy Colubia eagle-electrical problem

Hi, I'm new to the forum and cart ownership. I have a 98/99 par car eagle.
#3E-28857-D9. It had been idle for about 4 years. Brought it home and cleaned it up, new tires, switch and bought a charger.
Charged the batteries and flipped on the tow/run switch and noticed smoke coming from 74881-98 module. ($200.) I'm prepared to buy the module but I don't know why it smoked. I do not as of yet have a manual and don't know if that would be enough to get the troubleshooting done. I'm a aircraft mechanic and not afraid to do the work, just don't want to smoke another module.
Hope some of you may have some answers.
Thanks
Mike

Welcome.
As a Par Car owner myself (89 Legacy), I have found that there is little info available. Hopefully, you with a a newer model, will have more responses.

Given your occupation, I'm sure you checked that the switch operaton prior to connection to the batteries. Otherwise, I would be suspect of miswired switch, as a potential culpret that let the magic smoke out of your controler.

I did find a gem of a resource in "Bruce" at Quad City Golf Carts. http://www.quadcitygolfcars.com/
He seemed to have a fond familuraity for the par car.

He may at least point you in the right direction for a manual/schematic. And more likely provide insight to testing your current controler, to determine cause or if it is truley terminally damaged.

In any case, good luck.

Thanks for the reply, I have a manual on it's way and a new controller. Found a mechanic at Fedex that spent 12 years on electric carts. He is a wealth of info and said he didn't think it would be a big problem to get going.
--he did not say it would not be expensive.
I'll see in a few days.

Haven't seen the speed module smoke before, but here's the schematic for you. If it's been sitting, make sure your motor is free spinning, and you might want to inspect the brushes to make sure they are free moving and haven't developed any shorts.
