Charging from a charge inverter
Hi. Need to buy a charger. Goal is for the cart to do back up duty as an emergency power wall. As such, I'll need an inverter to get back to AC. Probably a 3kw. A small $150 unit of each would probably work but I'm looking for a more permenent solution as I intend to add solar and a larger pack later. The next step up all in one has a charge feature from the solar or line voltage to charge the battery pack. It is also the DC/aC inverter. The BMS will monitor and control the inverter/charger via mutual RS 485 ports to give just what the BMS wants for charging. I'd rather put the $300 toward the higher end integrated $600 final outcome.
Opinions and experiences with charging from an inverter? |

Re: Charging from a charge inverter
Ok now your other question makes sense, you were looking at the JK BMS inverter combo.
I don't know enough about it. If it didn't exist I would be using the regular JK BMS for the battery+ cart. Then use an all in one 48v solar inverter that could use the cart battery as the powerwall |

Re: Charging from a charge inverter
Always a great idea, and something I’ve researched in the past. Realistically your going to come close to $1,000. 48v to 120v inverters are not cheap especially when you want 3kw, sole is another few hundred and then a charge controller to handle the voltage and wattage.

Re: Charging from a charge inverter
Yes, it seems $650 or so is the starting point. But why flush money toward a temporary or partial solution. Lots more research to do.. did you ever go in this direction? What did you find? I wonder if there are Smart Grid or EV
tax credits available? In the meantime I'm loosing the summer as I build out this cart and project.. 80Amp 48v charger., then back feed it into the panel breaker, disconnect from the main house. Probably use a Gens Tran switch. Example: https://signaturesolar.com/eg4-3kw-o...put-pre-order/ |

I think it is very viable. Andy and Will have many videos, but they know where the landmines are. I don't. Or the checkbook to experiment and hope... Proceding cautiously.

Re: Charging from a charge inverter
I have done it in the past with while borrowing the equipment from my friend while he was building his power house (he lives off grid). I have not done it with lithium but the only change is a proper charge controller but I would not go cheap on that. The only real thing is properly securing the panels and using appropriate wiring. There are controllers with can bus for lithium.
Currently have lithium but It is something that I will likely put on the top of the play shed when it’s finished. In the mean time as backup and alternative charging I bought a 2500w dual fuel inverter generator, It works well for camping. |
