Default Yamaha g1 seems out of time, kicks back

My old G1 wouldn't start so I tried a number of things just now replaced the piston and rings as the compression was only about 75 it's back together now and has plenty of spark and fuel down the spark plug hole but once in a while it will hit but seems to kick back. I don't have the muffler on but I don't see how that would matter. how could the timing get off? it kinda seems like that. I have switched out the CDI mould with a known good one. any ideas?? thanks. Vernon

“ fuel down the spark plug hole“. ???

Hmmm…. It sure what that means. Maybe you’re flooding out? Too much fuel and every now and then it lights it off?
BTW…how’s your compression now?

the compression is still about 75-80 it acts like it is too fast on time.

If you're running it without the exhaust, it's not going to run the way it was designed. 2 strokes rely on the exhaust to tune the engine.

If you think it's out of time, pull the flywheel and check to see if the timing key has sheared.
