Default Individual battery volt check

Sorry to be such a noob, just joined. Did a search and couldn't find answer. I have a 2000 48v Club Car. I want to do a simple voltage check on each battery (using a digital tester) but confused. If I test each battery while they are all still connected am I really getting a per battery reading or an "average". In other words, do I have to disconnect the batteries for an accurate test?

Thanks

Not in my experience. I'm sort of a noob myself and just bought a multimeter. But, I've found I get an accurate reading if I switch my mm to 12v DC and check each battery individually while they are still wired together (I have 4x12v) and switch the mm to 200v and check the entire pack by probing the pos post on batt1 and the neg post on batt4.
