I strand corrected! , I agree with SJ, AC current flows on the surface of the strands. DC flows though/within entire strand.

Regardless of that We welders, those who do it professionally, prefer the highest stand count possible. 1 for flexibility and 2 for current carrying capabilities.

STOP STOP STOP Think about packing a ice chest.
This is for DC, more strands more copper per diameter
so you get more current. Big cans, jars leave more air
good for ice to cool your beer bad for ampacity.
