thanks for the info old mec. it was an old 530 chain. the engine countershaft sprocket is as large as space will allow, and the jackshaft sprocket is as small as possible. this is why i need a doubler gear box between the input shaft of the rear end and the driven gear.basicaly, i will replace the jackshaft with this little gear box. i am thinking around 3 to1 overdrive so i have more final drive gear options.

While reviewing your pictures again I wondered if maybe the bearing and or supports might be flexing some under sudden high torque? This could be enough to make chain try and climb the sprockets? Many many years ago in my dumb youth I raced auto's and motorcycles and while running at Bonneville the one time I had a new chain explode turning the calf of my leg into hamburger. Later I found that the stock frame on my old Indian Chief had a small hair line crack alowing the rear wheel to turn slightly causing the problem. After repairing never had that problem again.

i am thinking it was just a combination of an old chain, a notoriously sticky race track, and no clutch slippage. this track has killed many a race car rearends. i am thinking of going to a triangulated four link to stop any unwanted rearend flex. this would also give me more room for the exhaust.
