Default Testing Electric Motor please help

I have two carts. One that works fine and another one that worked fine until I pulled the 36V motor off it thinking I was going to send it in to PlumbQuick to make it go faster. I changed my mind and put it back on cart. Now it is no longer running. I took it apart and made sure there were no shorts and put back on axel. Tested continuity on it and all was fine. I'm trying to test it with a couple batteries to see if all is ok.

The motor is standard 36v electric club car with four terminals in one row - A1, S2, A2, S1. Its a 1996

Ok, so I searched this topic on here and other sites of how to just test the motor. I followed the instructions but all I'm getting is sparking when I connect the positive end. I tested this on the working cart and I got same results so I'm starting to wonder if the instructions I'm finding are incorrect for my motor.

Here is what I was told to do from what I found.
"Connect jumper from A1 to S1, Connect 12v positive to A2 and Negative to S2. Swap S1 and S2 to change direction of spin."

I don't get any movements just sparks. from both motors which are same. I know that one does work fine if connected to all 6 batteries the way it should .

Any ideas?

series motor test.....below. You will get a spark upon final connection as the motor will instantly draw amperage to run.... which is why the switch is in the drawing.

If your motor is still having problems you may have spun one of the studs around when removing it and broke an internal connection - in which case sending to PQ will fix it.

Hi Scotty.
it seems in your diagram it shows A2 to S1 is jumpered. Everywhere else they say "jump A1 to S1". thats what I've been doing. So which one is correct? Also how much spark can I expect? It seems like the sparking is almost frying the battery terminals. Would 12v be enough for this test? I was fairly careful when turning the post but I can take motor off and check inside again. what does it look like when its broken? Do you have any idea if the brushes inside the motor are supposed to be touching the motor armature parts with the attached brush springs in position?

My diagram is correct. It shows 18v. The motor must be mounted in the differential.
Lower voltage will cause the motor to draw higher amperage which will result in a bigger spark. Use the switch or make the final connection between a couple of old battery cables you don't care about and not at the battery where a spark could potentially ignite hydrogen gas should it be present from charging....

Thanks again Scotty, I will give it a shot. Maybe I had the wrong posts jumpered cause your diagram says A2 to S1 while every other post I searched on that does not have that diagram says "A1 to S1".

That just changes direction so either way is ok, If you read carefully in your fist link, he says to swap it to switch motor direction, so this isn't an issue for you.

As long as field is in series with Armature, it should run one way or the other.
