Adding a 30amp reducer
Ok, I just got new 6v T-105's put in and have made my first break in run. I purchased a reducer from ScottyP and I am making my plans to mount and install it. Scotty's instructions are very complete but I would like to get the insight of the guys on the site on a couple of ideas.
1. What gage wire would be good from the batteries to the reducer? I am leaning to 14 gage. I am going to run the +/- battery leads across the pack to the other side to hook up to the reducer. 2. What gage wire would be good from the reducer to my accessories? Right now all that will be is to the lights. I am leaning to 16 gage. Also, I do have a 8 place fuse box and a separate ground bar for the new light set-up and any other 'goodies' I decide to add. |

Re: Adding a 30amp reducer
Here's a wiring size/amps chart
Just fuse the wire close to the source for wire size/amps Examp, #14 wire , 6ft, use a 20 amp fuse |

Re: Adding a 30amp reducer
Basic rule of thumb- match size of wire to the size of the leads of the reducer.

Use whatever wire gauge is appropriate for the current needs based on the length of the wire needed. That table posted is a good reference for that information. |

With the wire lengths used on a golf cart I can still sleep at night.

Re: Adding a 30amp reducer
10-12g would more appropriate for the main battery pack supply and 14-16 gauge depending upon the amperage draw of the accessory you are feeding.

Re: Adding a 30amp reducer
I decided to go with 10 gage for the battery supply and 16 gage for all accessories...maybe. Might go with 14 gage as overkill.
Thanks for the replies guys! |

Re: Adding a 30amp reducer
That's pretty much opposite what you should do. Higher voltage battery supply can be smaller (lower amperage), while lower voltage (higher amperage) accessories should be larger, and ideally feed a fuse block.

I'm not suggesting that you reduce the supply size, but the accessory size should not be smaller than the supply. |
