Cool New batteries...right charger?

I just had 6 new 8V batts installed by Batteries Plus Bulbs, $650 installed at my house with a price match from Sam's Club. Nice, because I didn't have to lift a single battery.

My question is regarding my charger.

My cart has an OBC, which has failed.
I followed the directions to bypass the OBC by installing a 12awg wire from the neg post of 1st battery to the black cable on the back of the charging connector.

My charger is a PowerDrive, and it says it's "Computer controlled for an intelligent charge."

Can that charger be used with a bypassed OBC?...or do I need a new charger now? I'm afraid to plug it in right now for fear of screwing up my new batts...

If you run the grey sense-lead wire to the main negative battery the charger will turn on and charge your batteries, but because you're no longer using an OBC to control your charger, it will never turn off.

That's been my suspicion, just wasn't sure about the "Computer controlled " charger.
I guess they mean the OBC-controlled charger :)

So my assumption was that I'd either need a new OBC to work with the old charger, or just buy a new charger. I'm leaning towards a new charger, because 6 mos from now the old charger could die anyway.

I haven't read anywhere that the OBC does a better job than a true "intelligent" charger, so guess it's time to go shopping.

Any recommendations?

Compared to today's smart chargers the OBC does a hack job of battery management IMHO.
DO NOT buy a low amp charger. The charger needs to be rated at 10% of the battery amp hour which hopefully is 170-190 AH on your bargain buy.

It might be my imagination, but I think my DPI gives my trojans a stronger charge than the OEM charger I replaced.
I am very happy with the DPI Accusense.

The Accusense DPI gives a 5 stage charge compared to a 3 stage and it goes into a float mode when the charge is complete. You're dang right it does a better job.

Scottyb - I just got a DPI Accusense charger. Do I need to do anything to change the mode from the factory? I have an RXV with 6-8V Crown batteries.

I'm hoping this charger does a better job than the yellow Delta Q Quiq in giving me a full charge when I'm ready to ride! It seemed I was always low somewhat if haven't riden for a couple days.

You need to look in the owner's manual and set the charger up for crown batteries. It comes set up for Trojans. You do it by changing jumpers under that little black cover on front of the charger. Very easy to do.
