It's actually simple look up based on the ampacity of the wire. Blue Sea Systems even has an app called 'circuit wizard' to help with the look up.

I agree, the size of the main fuse has little impact on the branch fuse rating. The branch circuits should follow this guidline.for wire size (pic below). And pick a fuse for a branch about 33% higher than the expected load (thats just my opinion, there are official specs on that).

Oh yeah, ignore the "non-critical" column. They have to be 100% functional all of the time.

^^ This. I ran 8 gauge to the fuse box on our PDS cart. Overkill but I'm kind of know for that.
