Default Wont start in gear

I bought a G8 last year and i'm just now getting around to messing with it.I'm new to the yamaha's.The problem I'm having ,if it is one, is I can't get it to start when it's in gear. It will fire up just fine in nuetral, but if I put it in forward or reverse it will spin over but won't fire.
Can someone point me in the right direction for what I need to look for, like a safty switch or something. This is a 1991 model.
Thanks

Check the belt tension and see if it is dragging the starting speed down.
Does it run well and idle down when crawling.

I can only get it to start in neutrual and it dies if you take foot off gas, And won't idle down enough to put in gear while running. And I'm not sure if your suppose to be able too

Yamaha's don't idle. Put it in gear first, push the throttle, and it should drive away! There is no stall spring in Yamaha clutches!

DO NOT ATTEMPT TO PUT IN GEAR, WITH MOTOR RUNNING! Break tranny!!

Mike, Thats the problem. It will only start in neutral. You put it in gear and all it does is spin over with the starter and won't fire.

There is no circuitry on a G8 that tells it when not to fire . Un less that micro switch is shorted somehow.

Un plug it ( on the shifter handle)
