Default Lock Washers on Battery Post

Why do people not use lock washers to keep the battery cables from coming lose ? Every time I check mine (monthly) they can be tightened a bit.

We always do - JUST MAKE SURE YOU USE STAINLESS!!!

A standard lockwasher will disappear quicly from corrosion, then you have a huge problem

I guess since "you always do" it helps with keeping stuff tight. I'm in the fastener business, I think I'll add some to my lugs

I always use stainless washers too. If you don't have stainless your better off not using any at all.

I also carry a silicon bronze lock washer which are supposed to have a high resistance to corrosion, a box of 25 cost like 4 times more than a box of the stainless ones. Actually my cost on all of these are pretty cheap !

Hitman,

Just stick with stainless.... I've seen the mess created when dissimilar metals are put together in a damp, corrosive environment from years of fooling with boats kept in salt water.. Silicon Bronze will turn anodic when in contact with stainless steel.. Since the studs on the batteries are stainless, stick with stainless washers and nuts..

Final question: Do the washers actually help, or do the nuts still loosen up over time?

I would like to give the SS lock washers a try myself.

IMO, the cables loosening is caused by the cable terminal actually "sinking" into the top of the lead battery post when the lead is warmed up from heavy amp draw.. This is aggravated by corroded cables that cause even more heat at the connections.. Periodically, the tops of the posts need to be refaced to get a flat surface for the terminal to make contact with.. BU is the only place I've seen that sells a refacing tool.. I bought mine years ago at a marine dealer.. Most boats still use the stud type of cable connections..
