Default New to me 1989 Marathon 2 cycle exhaust

Just picked up my first cart last week. Its a 1989 Marathon 2 cycle. I've been searching and not really getting the answers I need. I do believe that my exhaust is toasted and in need of replacement. As most of you are probably aware a replacement exhaust for this particular cart is over $700 which is almost what I paid for this thing. Is there another muffler that is able to be modified to fit and work instead of almost doubling my purchase price of this cart?

The 3PG exhausts are out there for around $200 if you look (new) - do more looking, LOL

I've looked pretty extensively and haven't seen anything less that $700 and I'm usually pretty good at finding the best deal. But besides that, someone has had to at least tried to put a different model of muffler on one of these. Did or didn't it work out?

You're in luck - we just pulled the muffler off of my dad's 89 Marathon to get to his starter/generator.... Are you interested?

Possibly interested depending on price.

Has anyone cut one of these open? Are the baffles just slid in or welded in? I'm assuming there's no packing in this since people are BBQing them so they must just be chambered. Correct?

I believe there is packing in the original and did see a post awhile back where a member cut his apart an re packed it then welded it back together you my do a search. Yes we do BBQ the muffler and maybe not the best choice but a plugged up muffler isn't any good either. I guess you could say choose your poison. BBQ or buy new if you can find it. In your case I've seen where a muffler is going for $400-$700 ouch what a gig.

Man, if I was shelling out $400-$700 I'd go for a tuned stinger.

I'm not one of these "buy a golf cart and part it out" kind of people... Just have a muffler off of my dad's cart - how much would you buy it for?
