+1 for 48v should be part of the plan. I have done many 36->48 conversions (including my own marathon), and never heard "I wish I hadn't went that route". I used a Alltrax controller, and a stock Ezgo "high speed - 19mph @ 36v" motor on 48v, and it performed well.
