I need more low down power on a G1
We use a couple of buggys (a Club Car and a G1) to tow Sailplanes at walking speed around an airfield but the G1 lacks power at walking speed making the tow very difficult and jerky. Is there a way of getting more power at low speed. We have installed a heavier spring in the secondary clutch which has helped. I have read that people have packed the primary clutch spring with an 1/8 inch washer to get better results but it didn't say if that was at the lower end of the power range.
If someone could give some advise on the subject that would be nice. |

Re: I need more low down power on a G1
If you are talking about more power/torque at just off idle, the only way to get significantly more is to upgrade the engine size. The 215cc G1 engine is good at around 2500 rpm and up, but below that it's really not a good performer. Never owned a Club Car. Most single cylinder small engines are tuned to make their peak power in the 3000-3600 rpm range, which would put you in the 15 mph range on most stock carts. A few years back I tried using my G1 for pulling a mower on my property, needless to say it didn't work out well. It does not like to run at a slow speed at all.
A Vtwin engine, on the other hand, will deliver it's peak torque much much lower in the rpm range, usually just off idle. A Briggs 16hp Vanguard will get the job done much more efficiently. With the Vtwin I could pull that mower around all day long and it was super easy to go slow, loved running slowly. With that said, if an engine swap isn't in your budget etc, then basic tuning of your current engine might get you "enough"? Make sure your engine is running tip top, do a basic tune up, install new belt and clutches, etc. Maybe the old carts you're using are down on power from high hours etc? |

Re: I need more low down power on a G1
Thank you for your advice. I would love to change the engine but it would also need a different gear box for the reverse. I may have to get the staff to jog a little, might do them good.
I'm going to contact Don as suggested but living in Britain the parts just are not available here and expensive to import. |

I hear ya. You definitely can get more power out of the G1, I just don't know if if will help you off idle like you need.

I pull logs with the Little Monster. She is a highly modified G1. pulls like a tractor spins to 8100 rpm.

The Little Monster is a lovely looking thing but even if the parts were available over here it is a bit over the top for our use. Thank you anyway.
Thoughts are now tending to get a 4 stroke buggy and rehome the G1 |

Re: I need more low down power on a G1
I'd first make sure all your basics are accounted for and in good condition. Replace worn parts and let that 215 work the way it should.
1. Spark plug, air filter, carb, fuel filter, fuel pump, fuel & vac lines, etc 2. Belt, good Yamaha quality 3. Clutches, same Yamaha only no aftermarket 4. Oil/fuel mixture 125:1 if premixing 5. Fuel quality, non ethanol fuel only I had a G1 and had all of Don Plowman's mods done to it. I rebuilt the engine, cleaned the Mikuni carb, added the Plowman's clutches, belt, and muffler. That baby ran super good, would pull the kids around in the snow easily. It plowed snow nicely too. Don't know what kind of weight you are pulling, but with small tires and a Plowman's clutch kit you should be able to pull 1200-1500 lbs on flat pavement without issue. One other thing you could try is a wider belt. This will sit above the rim of the secondary clutch sheaves, basically making it have a lower final drive ratio starting out. |

Clutching will do the trick. All you need to do is raise the engagement speed a bit. My comet clutch will allow the cart to idle. I will agree though a big block 4 stroke will pull from low rpm.
