Default EMP proof a G29....

My wife asked yesterday after watching some documentary, if it was in fact possible to EMP proof our G29? I laughed at first and then thought, Hmmm.... why not! lol what say the hive?

The only thing on a typical carb'ed Yammy that might be affected by an EMP, would be the TCI module. Nothing else is suceptable. EFI, on the other hand, would have the ECU module as well.

What about the Battery? Wouldn't that get zapped?

Don't think batteries are susceptible. Guys always talk about older diesel vehicles for being almost emp proof stock. Mechanical everything, but still have a battery.

As I understand emp, it's integrated circuits that are affected. Chips, transistors, possibly capacitors?

As I've read it, it's only "sensitive" electronics that can get fried by EMP. Tube radios, straight electrical parts etc, should not be affected. Batteries, starters etc, should be ok.

Anything that can be destroyed by static can be destroyed by an EMP pulse.. Or a styrofoam cup.

It takes 3 things to generate electricity:

1. A magnetic field;
2. A closed conductive loop;
and
3. Relative motion between them.

The amount of electricity created is subject to the following rules;
1. The bigger the loop, or the more the number of loops, the more magnetic field captured, the bigger the current generated (and an associated electromotive force [EMF]....AKA voltage).
2. The faster the relative motion, the bigger the current.
3. The stronger the magnetic field, the bigger the current.
And, probably a few more that I've forgotten.

So, in theory, any moving magnetic field (like an EMP) cutting across ANY closed circuit of any kind of conducting material, is subject to producing a current in that circuit.

What makes small electronic components so susceptible to EMP is the 10's, 100's and/or 1000's of little loops of conductors on all the circuit boards of any TV, laptop, etc., etc.. The amount of EMF induced into these types of circuits can certainly, easily damage solid state components.

However, any battery with any kind of component drawing electricity off of it (like the circuit keeping a car clock operating even when the key is off) is still susceptible to EMP.

A light circuit in a house is susceptible to it. However, the amount of induced EMF & current into this type of circuit will probably not damage the lamp (might zap an LED light). Here the issue is the HUGE loop created from your power company's generators to powerlines to homes back to powerlines and back to the generators. This loop will (theoretically) produce a huge EMF and zap the generators.

So, protect your cart by parking it in a metal building that is very well grounded to several earth grounds (think loop here...ground to metal building to ground). Unplug as many connectors and open as many circuits as you can (remove the battery cables from the battery and remove any grounds that you can).

The problem is, who's gonna get enough notice to take care of all this before the event happens....not likely.

Good luck. If you do manage to save your cart, everyone will be your friend!!
