So, it's not the carb...
I'm pretty sure it's not at least. Just did a lifan swap using the Vegas Carts kit.
The engine would die when I put it in gear, or tried to. Turned up the idle and it drives great (If I start it in gear). But I CANNOT get it to go in gear at idle. Is there an issue with my clutch? Thoughts? Thanks for your help on the other threads! |

It could be your belt needs a bit more slack. Or you might check your shifter cables for kinks too. I had trouble shifting out of gear until I rerouted the cables and loosened the cable adjustment a bit.

If the engine is running the clutch will spin. Like HBR said, the difference is it spinning fast enough to close the clutch and grab the belt.

Sorry, I’m driving. It’s almost like the main clutch needs to be adjusted. It is spinning the drive belt no matter the RPM.

Re: So, it's not the carb...
What clutch is it, a stock cart clutch will engage pretty low rpm so the engine must idle slow. If you have a stock 420 you usually have to mess with the carb to get there, or get a vegas 460 carb with the idle mix screw. I had to remove the cap over the screw with mine so I could open it up and get a lower idle. Thanks epa, not. The lawn engines are made to run over 1000 rpm idle and carts do not they are actually made to not run while shifting. It can be hard to make them shift while running and even damage them. However the cart should not move in gear. Its better to get a aftermarket clutch if you toss the gen and use a starter, even then you have to shift forward to reverse pretty quick or the belt starts spinning. Aftermarket clutch will stay open better at idle, some have rollers in the center. Make sure you don't have too wide a belt most carts are 1 3/16 except club cars.

Thanks SHO, bought the kit from Vegas Carts, so it’s the 780.
