Default G1 timing marks flip

This makes no sense
I'm using timing gun to see why I'm getting pre mature detonation so I could adjust ... Put extra marks on can so I would know what neighborhood I'm in . So I hit the starter and start using the light only to find the fan mark that is supposed to line up with case mark is instead lining up with Mark on the stator plate .

How does that flip happen and will I have enough plate to adjust the timing ?

Hmm long shot but have your checked fly wheel key if it shears it will throw timing off

Shears like it's not in one piece ?
I just turned my stator plate as far forward ... Clockwise ... To the end .... Then hit it with the timing light again and it's still showing spark at the point where the T-Mark on the fan lines up with the T-mark on the stator plate.
The T-MARK on the fan should line up with the T-MARK on the crankcase
T-MARK on the magneto should line up with T-MARK on the stator plate

What would be the best way to ground the engine to the frame ? The woodruff key is in fine shape
I moved the stator plate and the timing light showed me the mark didn't mov
