Default Re: 05 Precedent - Hesitation When Starting

Sounds like the starter/generator is having a hard time turning the motor past the compression stroke. This is actually pretty common.

My carryall has the FE350 Kawasaki in it too. It was doing the same thing (and to an extent still does, just not nearly as bad). I replaced the solenoid, not for this issue but because it stuck on and I had to disconnect the battery to shut the cart off lol. New solenoid didnt make a difference though.

What is the voltage you see at the solenoid when cranking? Particularly when it "sticks"?

First, disconnect the battery and have it load tested to make sure it is strong. While disconnected, use a wire brush and clean the terminals really good and the wires/ring terminals where the connect to the battery terminals. Inspect the starter/generator brushes to see how worn they are. Inspect the cables/ring terminals closely for corrosion or wear at all of the connections (battery, solenoid, starter/generator).

Many things can cause it, including a weak starter/generator, just have to check everything. For me, it cured 90% of it replacing the battery cable going from battery + to solenoid. The cable was old and green. It still.does it a little, but not nearly as bad as before. I'll eventually replace the cable from solenoid to S/G and the S/G ground cables, and battery ground cables. Should clear it up the rest of the way judging by the difference it made.teplacing the 1 cable I replaced.

But inspect things first before replacing. Sometimes cheap/free tweaks make more difference than big expensive parts/repairs.
