Default 97 workhorse spitting gas

My 97 workhorse has some issues. It is spitting gas out of the carb at low to mid power settings. To say the motor is running rich is a huge under statement. both cylinders are firing with new plugs and compression is 120/100.

To describe the problem differently. At 5 to 50% power, air fuel mixture is coming out of the carb and filling my air box with fuel.

Any tips on what could be causing this? Bad cylinder/valves/timing?

Thanks guys

Your compression is low. Have you adjusted the valves? Set to .004 cold

Thanks for the tip on valve clearance. I,m just wondering, if the valves were out of adjustment wouldn't the pressure bleed off? The holding pressure is 120/90 and it held that pressure for 30 seconds.

Thanks

I know my own compression gauge will not bleed off b/c of the schrader valve built in it to prevent bleed off so an accurate reading can be obtained. Like scotty said though, that comp. is toooooo low.. Valve adjustment is the first place to start and may very well be your problem. As the valves wear, they seat into the head, in turn this throws the valves out of whack..

Learned something new about cylinder pressure gauges. Thanks I will look at the valves tomorrow.

This morning I set the valves on the workhorse. Only one was in need of adjustment, but I checked all four. No significant improvement.
Compression is now 120psi on both sides. Still spitting fuel out of carb and slow to rev up to speed with low torque.
Any new suggestions?
I'm loading up a youtube video showing my issue. I will post soon.

Thanks, Dave

mine is doing this as well. did you find the issue? i'm thinking the face of the valves of my cart have been pounded out and leak compression causing it to spit fuel out. just havent decided to pull the head yet.

I think the new valves solved my fuel out the carb problem. Since I was going into the motor I replace the rings and my cam, so I can't say for sure if it was valves.
Hope that helps.
