I can't get a picture of mine but its a bolt with a cable attatched to it. On the G8 it is under the air box assembly. It is supposed to stop the motor from rocking too far back under acceleration. if it is loose/worn/broken the motor will lean backwards under throttle and not keep good tension on your clutch belt.
This is a pic of the drive and driven clutches at rest and full throttle

Well I can't see it from the pics, but if you are sure that the G1 has one, then mine is missing. Maybe that's my problem. I've been fighting with this belt/clutch slip issue and lack of low end power.

Early G1's did not have a tensioner. It was added in later production models. See item #13 below. I would double-check the motor mounts to be sure none are broken or worn/ mushy allowing the engine to shift under load.

I didn't think there was a tensioner, but I never know with this cart. It was disassembled when I got it, so I've had to find alot of missing parts already.

I did find a motor mount that was loose. It looks like the nut was missing. Didn't catch that before. Could that really cause the cvt to act wacky?

Anything that allows the engine to rock backwards and put slack in the clutch belt will cause it. I also noticed that when my belt got worn I loss power. Bought a new belt and it was almost 1/4 of an inch wider so the old one was pretty worn.

Ok Cajun, looks like we're chatting in two threads lol!

Anyway, I think I have multiple problems with my current setup....

1.) Problem: Don't like the way the cart takes off as soon as the starter/gen starts without the engine running. Actually goes down the driveway like 3-5 feet before the engine starts.

Desired Result: Would like the cart to be able to start and idle without the cart moving. Since the G1 doesn't have neutral in the transaxle, how do I make this happen? I used a Club Car belt 37 3/8" x 1" to make this possible.

2.) Problem: Not enough low end power for working and going up hills. Flat ground is ok. Hills....not so good.

Desired Result: Would like to be able to climb a small hill without bogging down and stopping. I'm not talking "dunes" type hills. Just your normal rolling wooded Ohio trail type hills.

3.) Problem: Belt slips whenever under a decent load like stopping on a hill or trying to cross a small ravine/drainage ditch.

Desired Result: Would like to be able to do this without the belt slipping.

4.) Problem: Not enough power.

Desired Result: More power. Not 18hp big block power, but a few more horses would be nice.

When I bought my 84 G1 I found out that someone had removed the spring in the primary clutch and that is how I drive it now. It pulls hills fine. Lots of power. Both clutches seem to operate normal together. I make sure they are greased up to prevent them from sticking. As far as your cart moving 3 to 5 feet before it starts. Mine used to do the same thing because the bearing inside of the collar( where the belt rest on primary clutch) was frozen. I had to put some heat on it and lube it to free it up. Now it wont move until it starts even without the return spring not being there. I also have an 83 G1 and that one has the return spring in the clutch and I can tell you that there is not that much of a difference between the spring being in there or not. Good luck with it.

Yeah, my primary and secondary are clean, polished, greased very mildly, and move freely as they should. I talked to Don Plowman today and he told me that G1's just need time to stretch that belt out and in the meantime it will move while starting. Doesn't seem right to me, but I'll take his word for it, he's been doing this a long time! I was so impressed with what he had to say that I bought the power set up for the G1. Can't wait to try it out.
