G9 sport shifter build.. Pic heavy!!
After seeing my first sport shifter, I thought I've got to have one. I could not find one for the G9, probably because the seat folds forward. Soooo I thought lets try and build one. I made all mine out of aluminum but you could make it out of steel too. Aluminum is easy to machine and I had most of the material around the shop.
The first thing I had to do was make a wedge piece that goes behind the plastic pod to take up the dead space between the steel bracket for the shifter and the plastic. (My pic are not in order) I used a piece of 3/4 plate, but it is machined a little to make it a wedge. It is hard to see in the picture but at the top it is 3/4 and at the bottom it is about 1/2 or so. Now I have something in there to "sandwhich" the parts together. I then used 3/8 plate on the front side with taped holes to mount the mechanism too. The 3/4 angle for the cover is not attached to the rest of the mechanism (just with through bolts from the back) Enough typing and time for some pics. The ball swivels are from Ace hardware, 5/16 in size. One thing I did was where the 5/16 fine thread bold that the shifter handle rotates on is taped and then locked in with a lock nut, this way you can adjust the tension/ drag on that pivot point and also adjust it as it may wear. I think the fine thread on this is better than course thread.

I tried to give some measurements to go off of. It is kinda of a trial and error method. Have fun.

Re: G9 sport shifter build.. Pic heavy!!
Thanks, I forgot to add I did have to shorten the cable for the seat pod so it doesn't hit the floor. No big deal, there is still enough room to get to the motor and stuff. The sheet metal guys at work use some pretty neat cable clamps for hanging duct work, that I used for the new limit cable for the pod. I will post a pic and info about them later.

Thats a way cool build.. But beyond my ability.. I wonder if an aftermarket automotive "Gate" shifter could be retrofitted to do the job?
