'83 Marathon gasser wants a Honda Clone engine..
Hi guys, Im new to the golf cart thing. I just got a '83 Marathon gasser and the engine is blown. I want to throw in a 16hp honda clone motor. Has anyone done this with the stock rear-end? The pulley on my rear-end is not going parallel with the tires like the newer gas carts.
Thanks in advance! Taylor |

Those carts are 2 stroke and do not have the switchable rearend so you will loose reverse.

Re: '83 Marathon gasser wants a Honda Clone engine.. HELP!
Thanks Geoff, I already gathered that from looking at the engine. I was just wondering if anyone on here has tried it? Im also looking at getting a built clone engine from you. Is it possible to use my existing generator/starter with a clone engine?

It has been done likely have to dig for threads. You lose reverse. Some have mounted a newer 4 stroke cradle and rear into the cart. The old 2 stroke iirc the secondary clutch is right on the axle diff and engine beside it.

Re: '83 Marathon gasser wants a Honda Clone engine..
i have done this conversion. its a very long process. id advise spending the money a cart that already has a 4 stroke in it. unless you might have gotten the 4 stroke marathon then you may be okay or if you score you marathon dirt cheap as i did 200$ and the only reason i bought mine it already had a 4" lift and brand new tires that from some research are worth far more than what i payed for the cart and i parted out all the older ez go parts(ebay) which just about covered most of the swap expenses. as for parts i had to buy the 4 stroke axle(400$just about brand new took me a Year to find..), shifter setup from txt(75), new clutches for the engine and 4 stroke axle(400$). which in all took me an a year to find parts and all that . but i got it running and it will do just shy of 28 mph with 2 people and 30mph by myself the engine i have is a gx390 with a high flow filter exhaust and jet kit from nr-racing.com..

Re: '83 Marathon gasser wants a Honda Clone engine..
Took me a year to find a fwd/rev transaxle for my 1990 Marathon. Then I found two more right away for dirt cheap (they're stored in my shed and not currently for sale). Seems like they only come out of the woodwork if you don't need one. I know where there's a couple more if anybody in southern Ontario is looking. Location is near Tillsonburg, ON.
