Default g2 clutch questions

My 87 G2 drive belt started a little squeaking today. So I decided to look at the clutches.

I haven't measured the belt width lately. But I did notice the driven clutch has a ramp shoe missing but the sheaves do not feel dished out. And the primary clutch the sheave is worn where the belt runs at full rpm.

Besides the obvious of replacing the ramp shoes, what do the g2/g8/g9 gurus think?

Replace all ramp shoes very soon. If no windows in the sheaves, I would run them till there is. Replace the belt at anything under an inch and an eight, on a lifted car. Replace the helix (spring seat) with the new style if you can afford it. Better shoes in the new style. If lifted, install umax spring or after market spring in secondary clutch, along with spacer.

Thanks Mike. It is completely stock aside from a headlight kit, and having the governor turned up. It still has 3 of the 4 original tires on it.

Rj, if no shoes on it at all, then bet you have secondary sheave problems. The new style spring seat/helix will fit G2 through 22.

Here is a not very good picture.

Take a good look at the ramps on the secondary sliding sheave, where they contact the helix. If they are rough and beat up from metal to metal contact with the helix, that rough area on the sheave ramps, will destroy the new shoes in the new helix. If that rough area isn't smooth, I don't know if you can smooth that area out where all 3 have even contact pressure. Here is a picture of the ramps on my sheave. Bottom line is; you may have to buy a new sliding sheave as well.

This picture is in the G8 club thread on page 404 if you want to see it larger.
