Default How to install a fuel gauge in your G14.

Yesterday I spent an hour or so installing an electric fuel gauge and sending unit in my 95 G14. I was tired of having to remove the cap and look inside (I know, I'm lazy) as the tank is not very transparent.

As luck would have it, Princess Auto had a fuel gauge and sending unit on sale so I bought them. This is a Canadian store, so I'm not sure if there is something equivalent in the US but here are links to the parts that I bought:

http://www.princessauto.com/pal/en/G...auge/4230140.p

http://www.princessauto.com/pal/en/F...Unit/4230157.p

The sending unit has five screws on it that just happen to match the pattern on the top of the fuel tank in the G14 cart as seen in picture 1.

In Picture 2, I placed the gasket on top of the tank to show how it perfectly matches the pattern on the tank.

Next I drilled out the hole to the required 1.5 inch size. I had a vacuum handy to draw away any plastic, and used a knife for the final cut as I didn't want the round cutout falling into the tank. Then I had to cut a notch in the hole to fit the sending unit as it was quite wide which you can see in Picture 4.

Picture 5 is the finished installation of the sending unit, complete with ground wire and signal wire back to the gauge.

Before you put all five screws in, I advise to wire up the gauge and test to see if the sender is adjusted right. I followed all of the directions that were provided to adjust the depth of the sender (its on an adjustable slide) and it was pretty close to accurate. However, I was a little picky, and using a coat hanger wire to raise and lower the float I made adjustments until it reflected "Full" and "Empty" right on the money.

This gauge works great. The kids were impressed with it, and it doesn't seem to "slosh" at all. It also reflects charge vs start voltage. When the engine starts to move the cart, and the generator is now making power and not starting the engine, the gauge moves ever so slightly higher, showing me that the charging system is working. I was going to install a volt gauge, but I probably wont bother now.

Let me know if you have any questions or want me to re-edit this post for clarity.

Picture 1 is a shot inside the tank showing the float at the bottom. You can also see the fuel pickup tube that shows there is about two inches of gas in there. There is also some sediment/dirt in there I need to clean out.

Picture 2 shows the gauge taped under the dash. Surprisingly the tape is still holding the next day. Have to buy a mount kit for it.

Picture 3 is the fuel gauge in the dark. Bit of a blurry shot but it looks good at night.

Blurry Picture 4 is another view of the sender install. I had to change the sender wire to the white one shown as the other one had issues with insulation flaking off.

Awesome man.. For 20$ your not out a whole lot of money. Is the fuel gauge water proof say from water hose or thunderstorm? Also it is flush mountable??

Very nice!!! I was thinking of doing the same thing...nice to see someone followed through and actually did it!

I'll have to look at my G16 to see if the tank has the same spot to mount the sending unit. I seem to remember that my tank is different from that one.

Any part numbers on the boxes, etc we can search for in the states?

Looks good, only thing, the ground wire needs to return to battery. Could blow main fuse with it grounded to the frame. Might get by with such a small current draw. But I'd ground to battery.

I did same thing, but with Sunpro sending unit and gauge from Summit Racing (for you US shoppers). Looks good!

Great job on the install and the pics! Thanks!

Anyone have a link to a comparable product for us in the lower 48?

Thanks guys! I'm pretty happy with the install, it's working great and I hope you Americans can find a similar deal on a setup like this.

As for the unit being waterproof, I'm going to say no at this point. There are some holes in the back, one of them labelled "reset" (must have a button in there). I'm going to seal them with silicone to keep water out of there. Not sure if the front is sealed or not.

It should be flush mountable, it is a standard 2 inch gauge but I need to get a mount, too bad it didn't come with one.

There were no part numbers on the box that pulled up anything other than the Princess Auto webpage.

So far, the ground wire is working fine, and my lights are also grounded to the frame without any issues.

I'm curious to hear if the G9/G16 etc. carts have the same sending unit mount on the fuel tank.
