Default Governor Issues on G9A

I've got a Taylor-Dunn utility cart with a G9A motor and governor. Been having problems with it not running well - motor missing, slow, not much pulling power, etc.

Replaced the coil and carb, adjusted the valves according to instructions on this blog and motor is running great.

However, when driving it still struggles up hills and needs to be choked about 1/2 way to run decent. I've never worked with or on a governor before. I suspect that's where the problem is, because it runs fantastic in neutral with wide open choke.

Don't even know where to start with this. We bought this cart third hand and I know the governor had been adjusted down by the previous owner so it was safe for his grandkids. Any helpful tips out there on how to adjust the governor and troubleshooting? Cart manual is no help...

I'd start looking for sealed air box issues. They need the air box sealed correctly for the motor to run right, or it draws to much air and runs lean. Hence, needing the choke to run.

Then second, throttle cable adjustment might be the next critical thing to deal with.

Thank you Mike Mac, I will give that a try. By air box I assume you mean the plastic box the air filter is in? If so, that just might be it - 2 of the 4 tie downs are missing and I think the box has a large crack in the bottom...

I suspect the throttle cable is OK, it runs fine in Neutral, only under load does it have issues. Sound reasonable or should I check that too?

Not necessarily, I just mentioned it, if after the air box issue is fixed, seeing how its a transplant, that might be an issue waiting to pop up! Just FYI kinda thing.

Did you ever fix this? It does sound like an air/fuel mixture issue. Wether carb, air box, muffler, etc...

I checked the air box - it is a bit distorted and the gasket was shot. Rigged up a new gasket and straightened the box best I could - made a bit of a difference but wasn't able to seal the box too well. I'm going to try buying a new one and see what happens.

Brand new carb, that helped a lot. Did not think to check the muffler - it has been clearly repaired with a seriously sucky weld job, so maybe I'll replace that too.

If you can't get the airbox sealed or replace it with something else, you need to enlarge the main jet a little to make it run right. The engine should not bog on a hill with the governor on, it will give more gas up a hill it should pull harder. Is the rpm low you may have a clutch issue or bad belt. 1" wide belt is the limit and larger for a lifted cart, they are junk at that point (new is 1 3/16 wide). Clean and lube the clutches (assuming yamaha clutches). Use little grease you don't want it to get on belt about one pump is all in clutches with a zerk. Make sure the engine can't pull over to the trans under big loads, stock they have a little cable under the gen pulley that holds them under high torque like hills and towing. Or you can make a replacement, if they used yamaha mounts.

Looking up the air box to get a replacement, discovered there is a whole section of it missing. Gonna give that a try, new one on order.

I have a new belt, that was the first thing I tried a few months ago. Checked it today and little to no wear yet. Did not know about greasing the clutch, I will look for the grease zert and give that a try.

Stony, give G1-G9 a shout. He can be found in the G8 club, he may have a complete used one.
