Re: electric club car 1987 - electrical issue
Put the new ones at the master & low speeds they get used the most. Good luck

Re: electric club car 1987 - electrical issue
The $150 or so you are going to spend today to replace all 5 solenoids will transleate into even higher return on investment in 2-3 years when you go to "trade up" and you take a running/working cart in to do the deal. I know at my shop, when we take these in on trade, we automatically deduct $300 from the trade value if the solenoids look old and worn out. It will also prevent that aggrevation you will feel if you only replace 1 or 2 and have to do it all over again in a couple of months. If however you feel determined to replace only 1 or 2, I would do as Scotty suggests and replace them one at a time starting from the one furthest on the Drivers side of the cart.

Re: electric club car 1987 - electrical issue
Thanks rabbit (and scotty).
I basically know that you are right, and I will probably end up doing as you suggest ... all 5. Heck, there is likely more than one (2 or 3?) bad anyway. Steve |

Re: electric club car 1987 - electrical issue
OK, I'm back. I tried something just to see if I had any good solenoids. I switched #1 master with #5, and got nothing. I then switched #2 with #4, and still got nothing. I suppose #5 could have been bad, so when I put it in master position, that could explain no power? What is the chance that more than one of the solenoids is bad, possibly all 5 bad?
I am getting 5 distinct clicks from the accelerator box, so I think that part is ok, right? Scotty? Thx, Steve BTW, I note that on the back of the solenoids a "1987" date is stamped, so these are the originals in the car. |

Re: electric club car 1987 - electrical issue
You need to ascertain if the solenoids are actually getting the signal to make their connections.... that the micros are clicking in the speed selector box is good but no guarantee they are working... first I will C&P my little 'how a solenoid works' thing...
A quick overview of the solenoid is : The solenoid is a HD on/off switch or Contactor the connection is made /broken between the 2 large terminals. The 2 small terminals are the activation circuit. typically one terminal will have a constant negative connection to the pack. When Positive power is applied toi the second terminal the contact is drawn up against the spring to make contact. When power from either side of the activation circuit is removed then contact is released and the spring pushes it away interrupting the circuit ...It doesn't matter which terminal is neg or pos. ...then you go check if the neg is present on all the solenoids when you put it in gear with the key on ... and as the micros click do they actually provide the positive needed to fire the solenoid> .. or is it that the positive is constant and the micros control the negative? Either way ~ it works = you tell me when you come back. |

Re: electric club car 1987 - electrical issue
CORRECTION to my procedure.
I had the F/R in neutral (yes, a "duh" moment) so I was getting no action at all. Now that it is in F, the rear wheels engage. As I depress the accelerator, I get one click with nothing happening. On the second click, rear wheels turn. Seems like I get one additional speed as I continue to depress the accelerator to click #3, but that's it, only a two speed? Seems to me that noids #1, #2, and #3 are doing their job, but #4 and #5 (formerly in the #2 & #1 position respectively) may both be bad? I guess I can swap #4 and #5 noid into the 1st position to check to see if either is bad? I know that is time consuming and there is a better way, but will that procedure tell me if I need to replace both #4 & #5? Hey, I've got the time, and I'm trying to learn what is happening here. I watched the you tube videos with MODEEM ... those were quite helpful. Thanks, Steve BTW, if I need to replace two noids, I would put the new ones in position #1 & position #2! |

Re: electric club car 1987 - electrical issue
shadow,
It's now 7:37 PM, I'm on my 2nd glass of good wine, and I'm LMAO, because you're right. Thanks for your help, and Scotty and others too. I know more now than I did this AM! I'm not mechanical (or electrical) but I don't mind wading into a situation to figure it out, especially with the good help I've gotten from you guys. Steve |
