4 stroke - spitting gas thru carb - the finale!
I posted a couple of earlier threads about my new acquisition - a 1992 marathon that was running like a dog - would only take part throttle and spit gas back through the carb.
We thought it might be inlet valves so I purchased a used head from Ebay and rebuilt it with new inlet valves and then pulled the old head off the engine. The inlet valves were fine and apart from being well sooted up, the head cleaned up well. However, when I pulled the timing belt off I found that the drive pulley could be rotated 90 degrees - the woodruff (half moon) key had completely sheared off. So the engine timing was completely off hence the problems. I couldn't remove the bits of the old key so ended up with a dremel and a rasp bit and cut a new slot. Reassembled everything and it runs like a champ! So just in case anyone else comes across a similar problem - worth checking the drive pulley before you pull the head :) |

Re: 4 stroke - spitting gas thru carb - the finale!
My 98 4 stroke has a similar problem. In very cold weather it is hard to start. I remove the air filter and find a small puddle of gas at the base of the carb inlet. I clean that up, hook up a battery charger, put the cart in neutral and crank it. It usually will start right up. After the engine starts once it, I replace air filter, remove charger cables, and leaving it in neutral, crank it again. It starts. After it starts it runs like a goosed moose.
Someone said to adjust valves, but I don't want to get into that yet. Is there a chance that the choke shaft is worn and that it is sucking air? Will that make it puddle gas under the inlet? Thanks, EZgoRider |

Had almost the same problem with my 95 workhorse. When i Opened up the air cleaner, it also had gas in the filter housing.
I changes out the sparkplugs, and cleaned the conections on the solionoid. Tryed again without choker, started right up. Hvad a nice weekend, and merry christmas |

Thanks for your reply, Flemming.
