1989 EZGO - Only Runs on Choke
I have a 1989 EZGO that ran great last summer. I put it away over the winter and now it will only run when it is choked. What I have to do is when I go to take off I have to choke it all the way and then it starts to go after a bit and then I can push the choke in about halfway and it runs fine. Once I let off the gas and then push on the gas again I have to full choke it again to get it to go.
What I have done so far: - New Fuel Filter - New Gas Line - New Spark Plug Thanks for any help you can provide. |

Rembove, disassemble and throughly clean the carburetor. Stale gas has probably got things gummed up inside.

My thoughts too. Carb is probably clogged / gummed up. That happened to my boats and motorcycles if not fogged/stored properly.
If you don't have time to disassemble the carb, you could try the SeaFoam cleaning method. There's some YouTube videos on it. It works fairly well. |

I have no qualms of pulling the carb and cleaning it real good, but I have never done it before. Is there anything that I can truly mess up by doing it myself? I do have some mechanical knowledge, but just not on golf carts.

I have no familiarity with SeaFoam. Are you saying if you add SeaFoam to the fuel and can get it started, the additive will clean varnish / gunk / etc? If so, I'm trying it!

SeaFoam is not going to do what you need.
Pull up the schematic in case you drop some thing. Lay out a shop towel to work on. Take the float bowl off, clean every thing. |

Re: 1989 EZGO - Only Runs on Choke
When tearing down a carb always turn carb adjustments in gently while noting the number of turns to return to a starting place after cleaning. I use two cooky sheets, one to to work on and one to lay the parts out in the order they come off the carb. pickup a welding torch tip cleaner kit for the small orifices and pluck a single wire from a wire brush for the very small ones.

Ditto on taking the carb apart with the above cautions of the other postings on this.I usually hose out passages and clean removed parts with carb cleaner.

X2 on this and everything above. I follow up the hosing of the small jets and ports with a blast of air from the blow gun on the compressor. Just be very careful not to launch small parts across the shop with the air pressure. (Don't ask )
