Do the holes line up with the original "no step." If so, why not replace with the original?

Something else to consider...
When the body is ready for paint, glue the buttons in the holes without the pad, and paint them along with the body!

Unless you golf and insist on using the rear fender to retie your shoes... (which is why they're there)

Yeah, if you're going to the trouble of sanding and repainting; why not fill in the holes and ditch the rubber pads? You'll never miss them especially if you plan on using a rear seat since it almost completely covers the area.
