You might start by seeing what is in there now. Three commonly used batteries are Trojan T-105 (good-expensive), Interstate U-2200 (good-less expensive) and Sams Club GC batteries (good-least expensive). Trojan is probably a little better at tolerating bad chargers.

36v is below the 50% capacity mark where batts need recharging. SG readings are more reliable than voltage.... here is a chart
