Default Pendicular Motor Replacement

recently got an Ezgo Marathon and put 5 new batteries in it. i got it to drag baseball fields but looking to make it into a hunting buggy. i know it's a marathon and by diagrams posted somewhere between 84-87? the serial plate has been removed. can i replace the motor with "the beast" or a D&D 4:1? or are they not compatible since the motor goes directly to the rear axle (attaches perpendicular)?
thanks for any help,
garold

If the motor is perpendicular to the axle then my guess is it is equipped with an armature gear on the output shaft and not a splined output shaft like the newer motors. About your only option with that motor is to have someone like EMP or your local motor shop rewind it for more power. Years ago there used to be a field coil upgrade for that motor that would get you to 3.0 or 3.5 hp. I don't remember or for that matter know if that option is even still available. Also, I think you may be off a little bit on the year. IIRC I think 84 was the last year or maybe even earlier for the perpendicular mounted motor. I think 85 was the first year for the reconfigured (parallel mounted motor) rear end.

HIH!

Good luck.

Not sure how much you can drag with that old resistor coil cart before the resistors overheat?
