Re: 2010 EZGO TXT has limited range
i bought them with the cart about 5 months ago. They are Trojan, i gave a brief description above but here is the initial problem i had with batteries.... They were over filled with water so much so that it overflowed when charging. I took water out and put it down to a reasonable amount. could that have anything to do with my issues?

When a battery is filled at the factory, they put about 6.5 quarts of electrolyte in it. The electrolyte is roughly 1/3 pure sulfuric acid (H2SO4) and 2/3 pure water (H2O), by weight. During the normal charging and discharging processes, water is lost through electrolysis (Broken down to Hydrogen and Oxygen, which escapes as gasses). None of the sulfuric acid is lost during charging and discharging, so only distilled water is added to return the electrolyte to its proper level in the battery. Basically the same sulfuric acid that was put in the battery originally, stays in the battery until it dies. (Technically, it is the sulfate ions that never leave. As the battery ages, more and more of them are trapped in the plates as lead sulfate - PbSO4) When the battery is overfilled and some of the electrolyte bubbles over, or is removed to prevent it from bubbling over, sulfuric acid is lost and with it goes part of the battery's ability to store electrical energy. -------------- Since the batteries were overfilled when you got the cart, they very likely had been chronically overfilled in the past, so removing or not removing some electrolyte probable didn't make much, if any, difference. |

Regardless, its all history now, those batteries are done. Buy the best battery you can afford, and take good care of them.

Re: 2010 EZGO TXT has limited range
The volume of electrolyte varies by make and model of battery and Trojan did not reply when I asked what the electrolyte volume is for their batteries, but US Battery did and since the external dimensions and weights of their GC batteries are about the same for similar Voltages and AH capacities, I approximated the average volume US Battery provided.
US8VGCE = 6.82 Qt. US8VGC = 6.37 Qt. US8VGCHC = 6.03 Qt. The average of those three being 6.41 Qt, so saying 6.5 qts wasn't all that exact, nor was saying the acid to water mix was 1/3 to 2/3, but speaking in low-tech terms to illustrate the point I was attempting to convey, I figured they were close enough. |
