1996 G14 runs poorly in forward, but fine in reverse
Good morning and thank you in advance, Ive been a long time Forum guy but this is my first Golf Cart. My expertise is in snowmobiling and supermotos :)
Now to my problem, I recently purchased a G-14 and it seems to have a problem moving forward. If i step on the gas full throttle it wants to go but just kind of "chugs". If i feather the throttle and choke it i can get it going fine after awhile (sometimes backfires). But if you start out in reverse, you can pretty much smash the gas and it will take off no problem. I'm sure this is something stupid that i am just missing. I don't believe that there is anything wrong with the motor because once she gets moving it runs great. Any ideas would be great! |

Re: 1996 G14 runs poorly in forward, but fine in reverse
I don't know why that would happen, reverse is a gear in the trans and does not affect the engine. On those its really important the airbox is sealed up perfect because any leak will cause issues like you are having. Or you can jet the carb a little richer. Another cause is if the plastic spacer behind the carb (to head) is cracked, you can test that by spraying it with something while its running. Some people tighten them up and they break, or they just get old. And cleaning the carb never hurts. You can also pull the fuel line and run the starter and see if it pumps out it should spurt out each revolution.

Is it possible that the engine is getting its negative through the shift cables or some goofy thing like that.... I would try running a wire from the battery negative to the engine to see if the issue disappears.

All Neg/Pos cables are good. I will check for air leaks tonight. I did notice that the belt seems extremely loose. Should they be tight like on a snowmobile to were you can only press it down an inch or two?

If your s/g belt is loose the pulley will just spin. Make sure you have good tension there

im betting on well worn belt , check the top width it should be 1 3/16 wide when new and replaced when 1 inch or less wide , since reverse has taller gearing it will go just fine in reverse but in forward its like trying to start in second or third gear in a car either that or the driven clutch isnt closing or has broken.

The belt width is in spec, 1 3/16".
The belt deflection however, i believe is way to loose. If i squeeze the bottom and top of the belt in between the clutches i can i almost touch them. I think that's way to loose. Can someone confirm? Also, where do i buy a new belt haha. |

I don't know if a 14 has a torque cable or not, but might check for one!
I modifyed mine to use a bolt, but here is where it should be. Or bad motor mounts!! |

When you push the top of the belt down it should be about 1.5" deflection.

Yes a G14 suppose to have a cable. Mine didn't have one when I got it so I made one just like yours Mike . Works great
