G2 secondary clutch spring upgrade vs top end speed
I replaced my G2 gas secondary clutch spring with a stiffer upgrade. Would that affect top end speed? It feels like it pulls much better but at the expense of top end speed.
The old spring was just stock and would not really pull any longer. Thanks for the help! |

Re: G2 secondary clutch spring upgrade vs top end speed
If the spring is too strong it will hurt top speed, have to be careful what spring is used. I like the umax its a yamaha spring for utility carts. Make sure you are measuring speed as seat of pants can be confusing with different rpm the spring may have. Or check to see if belt is all the way to top of primary at top speed, mark it up and belt will wear it off. Another good spring is get one from plowmans. Even a stock spring can work pretty well, but original ones are usually toast that is why they don't work well. Also check your tension cable, make sure the belt is not worn too much 1" wide, but on lifted carts you need to replace before that.

That spring is huge!!! Never seen one like that. Doesn't look like it would allow the rear clutch to open that much (hey that rhymed).

Ramp shoes would help a lot also.

Re: G2 secondary clutch spring upgrade vs top end speed
The "ebay red spring" is way too stiff for anything other than slow speed towing and hill climbing. I used that spring a few years ago and my cart would only go 15 mph. It would pull pretty good at low speeds, but just wouldn't go any faster.
A new stock spring would probably serve you much better, as well as some ramp shoes, as others have mentioned. What is it you are looking to do with the cart? |

Re: G2 secondary clutch spring upgrade vs top end speed
I'd replace it with a standard torque spring or go with something from Plowman's if want to retain torque and have good top end. I've never had a standard torque spring diminish top end on any of my carts. Keep in mind that my clutches were all well maintained also and I kept drive belts installed as well.
And I'm assuming your cart is lifted with bigger wheels and tires? |

Looking at the pictures I see a couple thingshelix is on wrong side i.e. Not on proper surfaces, and missing shoes, outer sheeve does not seem to match inner in size, diameter or bevel, belt looks cocked, and as everyone else said spring.
