Yamaha G1 not firing
Ok my G1 just quit on me. New carb and fuel pump, good spark. Backfires through the exhaust. Seems to have good compression. I pulled the reed valves and noticed gaps in the narrow end of the cones. Not sure if the reed valves should not have any light coming through them. I was thinking it may be a timing issue. Can the timing "slip"? Maybe a stripped keyway?

Re: Yamaha G1 not firing
Should be tight fit without any cracks or fractures.

Re: Yamaha G1 not firing
Yes. Look closely at it for even a hairline looking crack

Re: Yamaha G1 not firing
A broken key could be a possibility it wouldn't hurt to take a look at it

Re: Yamaha G1 not firing
Really need some help guys. Checked the key on the flywheel and it's fine. Flipped the reed valves and I have not light coming thru at all. I replaced the crank seals a couple of months ago and marked the timing and those marks are dead on. Got great spark, even put fuel directly into carb but she just won't fire. I do get bursts of compression coming from exhaust. I BBQ the muffler when I replaced the seals so I know it's not a plugged exhaust. I was a heavy equip mechanic for a long time but this has me totally stumped. Anyone please?

What's the compression reading at wide open throttle?

Re: Yamaha G1 not firing
Haven't checked compression yet but I know she's firing bc the exhaust is getting hot. Pulled the carb, gonna clean it good and see what happens.

Re: Yamaha G1 not firing
Just because it's firing doesn't mean compression isn't the issue iv seen them fire enough to keep the motor running but not able to pull it's own weight I'd get a gauge and check it
