rebuild it or have it rebuilt. i would say most places that rebuild them could do it. or you may get by with just putting new brushes in it. that and turning the armature on a lathe is what most places call rebuilding.

I can have it turned down but I do not know alot about this so I would not know what to tell the machnists to do

turning the armature down where the brushes ride is a common thing. any starter rebuild shop knows what to do. it crates an even surface for the brushes to ride on and work properly. I'll actually do it in my drill press with a big file but I don't recommend anyone doing that. using a small lathe is the proper way to do that.

Hello I had the same problem with my start/gen checked out fine on bench but didn't have the power when it was on cart I had another one on parts cart put it on and starts right up you might have the same issue with yours just a thought

If the commutator or the brushes are torn up/bad then yes, it will have a huge effect on the performance. We have a place 'round here called "Genstar". They rebuild alternators, starters and generators. Any place that does that kind of work knows what to do.
