Inexpensive cargo box
Pulled the rear seat off my G16.
Went to Harbor Freight, they carry mostly cheap crap but sometimes you get something good. They had a cargo box that fits in a receiver hitch and can carry 500 pounds. All aluminum construction. $59. I'm in the boat business and had an old square tube bimini top so I cut it up, bolted it all together and have a great looking, at least I think so cargo box. Have more to do tomorrow to attach the top. |

Re: Inexpensive cargo box
It came with reflectors on the back. In the center is where the square tube for the receiver hitch would go. I have a stop light that goes into a receiver tube on yout car, I'm installing it in the square tube you see so I'll have a high mounted light as well, although since I don't drive on the street I won't hook up stop lights, just driving lights.

Re: Inexpensive cargo box
Looks great! I built mine from 1x1 tubing made a flatbed and welded corners on the rear of it. Put sheet aluminum on it, then screwed 2x8 cedar around the sides. Screwed it to angle and left a space to slide the gate down in between angle and wood. I put weatherstrip on the wood to keep gate quiet and in there. It also dumps, sometimes I carry dirt in it, and since it is solid bottom that is handy to wash it out. Only bad part is I had to silicone the tubing ends because the rust dripped on the body when it got left in the rain a few times. Of course I did that at work long ago, it was free except for the cedar. At the time it was about $9 for a stick of 1x1, the alum was left over stock car body sheet alum and I used steel rivets to hold it on.

Re: Inexpensive cargo box
It does look nice, is very likely I would have bought something instead of making one but could find nothing. I did find a HD tub about the right size but they wanted a fortune for a hunk of plastic and it was on the small side. One nice thing about a box is you can put a chair in it and sit above everyone, or stand and work on taller things like a house/etc.

Re: Inexpensive cargo box
Funny thing is that could be marketed as it sits. Nicely done.
